Yoora Lee (b. 1990) is a South Korean Artist based in Chicago, Illinois. She earned her BFA from Gachon University in Incheon, South Korea in 2015. After graduating, Lee immigrated to the United States and earned her PBCC in 2017 and her MFA in 2020 from the School of The Art Institute of Chicago.
Known for her distinct style influenced by analog television screens, Lee utilizes a subtle color palette to romanticize both the mundane and vulnerable moments in her daily life. Themes of nostalgia, voyeurism, intimacy, and self reflection are commonly explored in works that capture brief moments in an endless narrative. Drawing inspiration from cinema, Lee's subjects and compositions often stem from hazy memories that have been altered and exaggerated to emulate scenes in a drama. Lee further filters her narrative works using horizontal brushstrokes to mimic a moving image on a screen.
After graduating from her MFA, Lee was a finalist for the 2020 Fall Hopper Prize. She has since exhibited locally and internationally with solo exhibitions at Jude Gallery in Chicago, Another Place in New York, and a forthcoming show at T293 in Rome. She has participated in group exhibitions with Half Gallery, Shin Gallery, Galerie Mighela Shama in Geneva, and Moosey Art in London. Her work has been previously published in ArtMaze Magazine, Booooooom,
