The solo exhibition from the South Korean-born artist marks the latest showcase for the artist known for vibrant paintings depicting a combination of whimsical figures among stylized natural settings. Hyun currently lives and works in Seoul, Korea. But while attending the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena,Calif. She developed her unique illustrative style and meticulous painting technique. In her works, Hyun draws
inspiration from her memories, allowing her to utilize her experiences to create illustrious images. Her work is a medium for connecting her past and present, serving as a bridge between those old and new versions of herself.
Through Hyun's process, she explores her subconscious. By recalling those personal experiences and presenting them in her work, she comes to have a deeper understanding of herself. Hyun’s paintings are populated with multiple figures that reflect her personality and evoke a sense of fantasy drawn from a unique worldview that incorporates Korean artistic tradition with modern American flair. Enhancing that cultural remembrance, Hyun’s works are produced on hanji, incorporating into the very fabric of the paintings an
ancient and proud cultural heritage that evokes the viewer to absorb an artistic heritage dating back millennia while often incorporating a repetitive, almost printmaking style evocative of late 50’s and early 60’s American counter-culture pop idols on top of a distinctly Korean iconography.
While Fairytale Dream will be her first exhibition at Gallery Ascend, her impassioned works have been enjoyed in galleries worldwide. The gallery is looking forward to presenting Hyun’s delicate yet rich stylized forms for their distinguished visitors soon.
